SCITT Training Programme (Tuition Fee)

Working in tandem with schools in Bedfordshire, Northamptonshire, Hertfordshire and Cambridgeshire, we’re looking to train the next generation of primary teachers and future primary school leaders.

The SCITT programme is essentially an apprenticeship model of teacher training. It is distinctive from more traditional routes in that rather than spending the most part at university or college and only getting to experience a number of teaching practice placements while studying, trainees spend around two thirds of their time in schools. They only really come together at professional development sessions (academic lectures and workshops) at the central study facilities at Great Ouse Primary Academy. This greater emphasis on school-based learning combined with centre-based training equips students with the knowledge, skills and understanding of the key aspects required to be an effective teacher.

It is hoped that during training you’ll form very close attachments to your schools, their staff and, in particular, the person nominated to be your Mentor Assessor. You will emerge from this training with highly developed practical skills and, in our experience, a deeper understanding of schools and how they’re organised than you might have had if you had been ‘loaned’ to schools from a Higher Education Institution (HEI).

The majority of your school experience will take place in your partner school, though you will undertake an extensive programme of context-based learning in a small group of trainees in a base school. In the case of middle and nursery schools, they cannot by themselves offer the full age range of children required for your training so if your partnership school is a middle or a nursery school it will be ‘twinned’ with a lower school in order that you have access to the appropriate age range of children.

How much will it cost?

This route is open to all graduates and is funded by tuition fees paid by the trainee. You would be required to pay tuition fees of £9,000 and can apply to the Student Loans Company for tuition fee and maintenance loans. You may be eligible for a bursary from the National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL), or a scholarship dependent on the training subject and degree class.

Overseas candidates

We welcome candidates who’ve studied outside the UK but you’ll need to check first with NARIC to establish if your qualifications are equivalent to UK GCSEs, A levels or an undergraduate degree.

Primary candidates must have:

• A degree classified as a second class lower division (2.ii) or above
• GCSEs, or equivalent qualifications, in English, mathematics and science at grade C or above
• Some experience of working with young children and the ability to work as part of a team

What other requirements are there?

• You’ll need to have passed the professional skills test
• You’ll need to provide two references
• Your personal statement
• A minimum of two weeks prior classroom experience is desirable
• You need to be medically fit
• You need to disclose any criminal convictions
• Check with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) about compliance

All applications for entry onto any of our teacher training routes must be made through UCAS teacher training.

Financing your studies

We charge tuition fees for the SCITT programme† route. Some trainees may be eligible for a bursary while tuition fee loans, maintenance loans and maintenance grants are all available through the Student Loans Company.

† Student loans, grants, bursaries and scholarships are not available to salaried trainees.

It will largely depend on what age group you want to teach but we have schools and academies located throughout Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Hertfordshire, Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes where you will be doing your practical work.

School Direct Training Programme (Tuition Fee)

School Direct Training programmes are an innovative new teacher training programme where you learn ‘on the job’, a bit like student medics working in hospitals and learning alongside peers.

We are an accredited Initial Teacher Training (ITT) provider and work in collaboration with schools, taking a leading role in training teachers with a more school-centred focus. The main aim of the School Direct Training Programme is to allow schools to recruit and select the trainees they want with the expectation that the trainees will then go on to work within the schools, or partnership of schools, in which they trained, although there is no absolute guarantee of employment.

This route is an employment-based route into teaching suitable for high quality graduates with three or more years experience of work. Trainees will not be required to perform more than 90% 'teaching duties'.

Trainees are employed by schools as unqualified teachers, and are paid a salary on a minimum of Unqualified 1. The National College for Teaching and Leadership (NCTL) subsidises trainees' salaries and/or training, with the remainder funded by the appointing school. Student loans, grants, bursaries and scholarships are not available to salaried trainees.
